Salman Rushdie has won his battle with Facebook over the name he uses on his profile.

The company had deactivated the writer's fan page and tried to force him to use his real first name, Ahmed, to comply with its rules on anonymity.

The Booker prize-winning author told his 116,000 Twitter followers: "Victory! Facebook has buckled! I'm Salman Rushdie again. I feel SO much better. An identity crisis at my age is no fun."

Facebook said the action "was taken in error" and apologised for any inconvenience.
