For the first time ever, Microsoft's search engine Bing's global reach outpaced rival Yahoo! to nab second place on the worldwide search engine ladder in January.

While Bing slowly increased its lead on Yahoo! in February to capture 4.37 percent and 3.93 percent of the search engine market respectively, both search engines still trail well behind Google, whose search engine represented 89.94 percent of searches made in the global search engine market in February.

"It is significant that Bing overtook Yahoo! globally for the first time on a monthly basis but it remains a tough battle to claw back Google's market share," commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter in a March 1 statement.

"Although Google dipped below the 90% mark in February worldwide for the first time since August 2009 it shows little sign of losing its global dominance any time soon."
