Boris Johnson and Carrie Carrie Symmonds arrive at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Service in March

Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds have had a baby boy, Downing Street announced on Wednesday morning, and the question quickly began spreading on social media: what will he be called?

Johnson is the first prime minister to have a baby in office since David and Samantha Cameron in 2010, when they had daughter Florence.

Boris’s two previous sons are called Theodore and Milo, and a host of names have been suggested for his third boy.

Johnson was born Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, and the name Alexander is considered to be one of the leading contenders, while his father’s name Stanley is also among the favourites, which was also the name of the Conservative prime minister Stanley Baldwin, in office during the 1930s before the second world war.

The names of other Conservative prime ministers like Edward Heath (20/1), Arthur Balfour (10/1) and David Cameron (16/1) are also in the running.

Other suggestions include Winston (12/1), after Johnson’s political idol Winston Churchill, and Wilfred (5/1), the name of Johnson’s grandfather which is the current frontrunner according to Ladbrokes.

The name of Symonds' father, Matthew (50/1) is not thought to be a likely choice, and nor is the name of her journalist grandfather, John (50/1).

Less likely are some of his political counterparts. The first name of his Labour rival in the last general election, Jeremy Corbyn, is rated at 25/1 while his successor, Keir Starmer, is 50/1.

The names of his cabinet ministers like Rishi (Sunak) and Sajid (Javid) make the list as outside bets, while Michael (Gove) is a genuine possibility at 16/1.

The names of other global leaders – like Vladimir, Kim and Donald – are all long shots, but not as much of a stretch as the word which has defined his political legacy to date: Brexit (500/1).
