LAVENDER oil has long been reputed to heal the perineum after childbirth but research has shown that it is ineffective. A study by midwives in Cambridge, involving 635 women who had recently delivered, showed there to be no difference in levels of discomfort between those who added lavender oil to the bathwater for 10 days and another group who used a placebo.
