JOBS that involve repeated knee-bending, squatting or climbing stairs increase the risk of osteoarthritis, according to a study at the Medical Research Council's environmental epidemiology unit at Southampton. It found that squatters were seven times, kneelers three and a half times and stair climbers three times more likely to develop the disease. Jobs involving walking, standing, sitting or driving did not increase the risk.
