PATIENTS who need hip or knee replacements should have a thorough dental check-up before surgery, say researchers from Clatterbridge Hospital in Wirral. They report in the British Medical Journal that the bacteria which cause oral infections are often carried in the blood to the site of artificial joints, where they can cause disease so severe that a second joint replacement operation may be needed.
