Letter: I hate ironing - does that mean that I'm a man?

WHAT sweet optimism is shown by Jim Meyer, the producer of Why Men Don't Iron ("What men and women do best", Real Life, 21 June). He says, in defence of his programme's theory that men and women's brains are fundamentally different, that "some people think biological explanations may be used to block social change or excuse unacceptable behaviour". It is damn certain that this is exactly what will happen. Since when have the majority of people read the small print of scientific research, or understood that biological findings are always statistical and relate to averages? And what about the people whose brains are not average for their sex? Are female engineers and male nurses now going to be made to feel that they are "unnatural", not "proper" women and men?
