Mark Ronson says he identifies as sapiosexual

Mark Ronson has apologised for saying he identifies as sapiosexual.

The musician broached the topic in an interview for Rolling Stone’s “In Conversation” series in partnership with Ralph Lauren, a few days after saying during a television interview that he “feels like he identifies as sapiosexual” – meaning he’s attracted to other people’s intelligence.

His comments were met with scepticism on social media after it was reported that Ronson had come out as sapiosexual.

Some took issue with the idea that someone could “come out” as sapiosexual when that language is usually reserved to people in the LGBT+ community, for whom coming out is a complex process that comes with a risk of being marginalised.

“I do not consider myself part of any marginalised community and I apologise if anybody misunderstood or took offence to it,” Ronson told Rolling Stone.

He said that he had found out about sapiosexuality on the day of his TV interview and that, once told that it meant being attracted to intelligence, his response was: “That sounds great. Of course, who wouldn’t be?”

Ronson took issue with the way his remarks were met, adding: “It sounds like I went on a TV show to be like, ‘Guys, I have some big news!’ And the fact that I would go on and sort of declare myself – like as a heterosexual white male – part of any marginalised community was terrifying to me, or just embarrassing.”

The musician originally commented on sapiosexuality after a segment discussing it on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

“Now that we know that you’re single, he’s got very involved, Mark, in our sapiosexual debate this morning, and you identify as a man who likes intellect,” host Kate Garraway told him.

“I didn’t know there was a word for it,” Ronson said. “But I was really enjoying that segment. We were arguing back in the dressing room with a couple of your producers and yes, I feel like I identify as sapiosexual.”

“So you’re coming out as sapiosexual? This is great news, congratulations!” host Ben Shephard said.

“He’s out and proud on Good Morning Britain,” Garraway added.
