Last Chance To Buy: BMW 3-Series Coupe

When's it going?

In the autumn, according to BMW. The new one, though, will not be as pretty as the current model which is the best reason to find yourself the current-generation coupé.

What's good about it?

It isn't just an outdated two-door saloon. The coupé is lower, wider and prettier. BMW anoraks say the only common item between the saloon and coupé, apart from some engines and the interior, are the door handles. There is a great range of engines, from an entry-level 318i two-litre four-cylinder unit to a 320d diesel. The most interesting engines are the six-cylinder ones, the 320, 325 and 330, which delivered between 170 and 231bhp.

Most exciting of all is the 3.2 one on the M3. This great driving machine got even better when in 2003 BMW introduced a lightweight CSL version. It cost £20K more than the standard M3, with weight-saving composite materials and less standard equipment.

The standard M3, though, has everything as standard, including electric leather seats and alloy wheels. It also has more unique parts with bespoke dials, steering-wheel and seats. The M3 is a supercar for a fraction of the usual price, prices starting at just under £42K. It accelerates suddenly, getting to 60mph in under 5 seconds, and the handling is sensational.

The coupé, though, is not defined solely by the amazing M3. The half-price 318 has a sweet engine and similar looks. Itseats four and there is room for luggage in the boot. The diesel engine is a nice touch and suits the car's sporty nature perfectly. BMW have always excelled at interiors and that is all part of the special driving experience.

What's bad about it?

Nothing at all, it's perfect. Oh OK then, some have commented that it looks too similar to the old four-door saloon. Then there is the problem of the BMW badge and other drivers not letting you out of side turnings. If you can cope with that you will have a truly brilliant time.

How much?

Discounts have become easier to get on BMWs as they have now become mass-market cars and it is best to go to brokers for an easier time, although dealers will listen. At GR8cardeal.co.uk (0845 466 8888) a diesel 320 Cd ES was £18,864 with delivery mileage, saving just over £4,000 on the new price. Broker4cars.co.uk (01773 512806) could get you into a 318i ES for £16,620, a saving of £4,375.

Any snags?

Not too many. If there is a problem with the SMG gearbox then a dealer will have to reprogramme it for you. In upgrade terms it seems that plenty of owners upgrade the brakes with four-pot calipers especially if they tackle track days. Any judder under-braking is possibly going to be warped discs.
