A 108-year heritage is not to be sniffed at – and that heritage is exactly what Czech manufacturer Praga is headlining as it returns to the road-car market with its R1R after an absence of 68 years.

You may not have heard of Praga in modern times, but it’s not been idle away from the spotlight. It’s concentrated on making trucks, planes and karts, while around 30 of its R1 car racers have competed in America.

In commemoration, only 68 cars will be released, starting next year

The road-going version, the R1 R, is diminutive and lightweight. With the carbon-constructed model boasting only a 670kg kerbweight, it has a 575bhp per tonne power-to-weight ratio courtesy of a 390bhp Formula Renault 2.0-litre engine enhanced by Praga’s own turbo and electronics.

That forced induction means plenty of torque and a seemingly endless seam of power, complemented by a fast-shifting six-speed auto box.

Sitting low in the snug, well thought-out, two-seater cabin, everything falls within easy reach. To optimise space, the controls are slightly offset and switchgear is mounted in the roof. Visibility out is surprisingly good.

Limited time at the wheel meant we didn’t get chance to fully appreciate the abilities of the steering, ride, handling and brakes, but early signs were good.

Exclusivity is the watchword here; in commemoration, only 68 cars will be released, starting next year. Seems a bargain at £140,000.
