Woman furious after her date refuses to pay for her £100 lobster and wine
She said: 'Gentlemen ALWAYS pay'
Although most people are now happy to split the bill on a first date, one man found out the hard way that his date was not one of them - when she expressed outrage at having to pay for her £100 meal.
In a post uploaded to Reddit, which has since gone viral, the man, who goes by the username CuteBananaMuffin, shared the Facebook message exchange that occurred after he did not pay for his date’s lobster and bottle of wine.
The post, captioned “Well... There goes the ‘friendship’ with her” begins with the Reddit user asking the woman for another date and his date responding: “After what you did last time you expect me to go out with you again? Wow.”
The conversation escalates from there, with his date informing him of his wrongdoing - “you made me pay for my own food and drink while you paid only for yours.”
According to his response, he paid for his own meal - a beer and carbonara - and not for his date’s because she ordered a £70 ($90, €80) bottle of wine and £28 ($36, €31) lobster.
“You were really expecting me to pay that? I’m a student not your sugar daddy,” the Reddit user responded.
However, his explanation only infuriates his former date - who informs him that he is “so rude” and asks if he can’t pay for a girl’s food, why would she accept?
“Gentlemen ALWAYS pay for girl’s food,” the woman continues - before suggesting that her date’s only intention was to have sex.
In the comments on the exchange, which received more than 31,000 upvotes on Reddit, people were quick to criticise the man’s date for ordering an expensive meal in the belief that she wouldn’t be paying.
“That’s why she invited you out so she could get expensive food and wasn’t expecting to pay,” one person wrote.
Another said: “That’s incredibly obnoxious. Going out solely for the free lobster! Gives women a bad name.”
However, according to the Reddit user, he would have paid - if his date had ordered a reasonably priced meal.
“I usually pay for both sides when it comes to the bill, but I’m a student and I work 60 hours a week to pay for food, books, etc. so I obviously couldn’t afford to pay 110 euros for her food,” he told BoredPanda. “I asked her out again to apologise pretty much for the previous time, hoping we can go to a cheaper place so I could make up for it, but as you can see, the result was pretty bad…”
