TalkTalk and keeping yourself safe from cyber attacks

If you’re a TalkTalk customer, change your password at once and if you use the same password for other firms or accounts, change that too. To be as safe as possible, you should have different passwords for every account you have to stop fraudsters being able to access all your accounts just by stealing details from one. You should also change passwords regularly.

Wanna save £270? If you go into the red, switch banks!

Britain’s banks are ripping us off when it comes to current accounts, the Competition & Markets Authority has said. After a year-long investigation into retail banking it concluded that most of us could save £70 a year by switching current accounts. Those who slip into the red could save twice as much, while heavy overdraft users could save on average £260 a year by moving to a better-value account.

Older people are paying too much for heating and lighting: help them switch

The simplest way to save money? Switch energy tariffs. If you’ve never switched gas and electricity, savings of up to £300 a year could be had. That could be particularly crucial for older folk, many who struggle to pay bills and keep the heating off to save money, often with disastrous consequences. Big Energy Saving Week is a campaign to help people cut their fuel bills and get all the financial support they are entitled to. It’s urging householders to help elderly people who need support to winter-proof their energy bills.

“We’re urging sons, daughters, friends, neighbours and even older people themselves to help each other, or someone they know, to check and make sure they are on the best deal online or over the phone,” said Philip Sellwood, chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust. “It could make a real difference this winter.” For advice about switching visit BeAnEnergyShopper.com. Deal of the week: 25% off wine at Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury's is offering 25 per cent off if you buy six or more bottles of wine in store and online. The deal isn't available in Scotland or at Sainsbury's convenience stores, but otherwise runs from Wednesday 28 October until Monday 9 November. It includes all wine, champagne, sparking and fortified wines – and if you buy more than six bottles, the 25 per cent deal will apply to all of them. If you purchase wines that have already been discounted, the savings really seem to mount up. The supermarket's own- brand, non-vintage Blanc de Noirs champagne, for instance, is currently on offer at £17, down from £20. Buy six or more from next Wednesday and the price drops to £12.75.
