Are you taking Mr 0 per cent to help with the presents?

Anyone planning on paying for Christmas on plastic is missing a trick by not taking advantage of the many 0 per cent purchase deals currently on the market.

Sainsbury's reckons around 15 per cent of shoppers end up suffering credit card interest charges by not signing up for a 0 per cent deal.

It has calculated that anyone using a card with the market-average APR of 18.9 per cent would spend an extra £268.36 paying back a £2,000 purchase over 18 months, compared with a 0 per cent card.

While that sounds a strong argument for rushing to take out a card, bear in mind that if you don't pay off the balance within the 0 per cent interest-free period, as many fail to do, you will still be landed with interest charges.

It's also worth reminding you that putting purchases on credit cards means you're building up a debt. If you can pay it off at the end of the month and avoid charges – or even get cashback, as some cards offer – credit can be convenient and even a good idea. Otherwise it may make more sense to have a loan with planned repayments, so that you clear the debt as soon as possible .
