An open day next month offers free entry to more than 4,500 places across England that are usually closed to the public or charge for admission. Heritage Open Days celebrates England's architecture and culture by offering free access to castles, city halls, tunnels, police cells, private homes, and many more.

This year it's being held over the four days from Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 September and includes around 600 National Trust properties – such as the 18th-century Octogen at A La Ronde in Exmouth, Devon, pictured right – which is opening for free on the Saturday. The event has been held for 19 years and new attractions include Brightwalton Ecohouse in Berkshire, Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Chatley Heath Semaphore Tower in Surrey. Guided tours will be included free at many locations but the most popular ones will need to be pre-booked through the event's website at www.heritageopendays.org.uk
