Merger forms new US bank

A new banking giant emerged in the United States yesterday after the North Carolina-based First Union bank announced a planned merger with First Fidelity of New Jersey in a stock-swap transaction worth $5.4 billion. The deal will be the biggest ever in US banking history and will create the sixth largest US bank
