Sky will go head-to-head with rival broadcasters including BT in the latest auction for live Premier League rights – covering the 2016-2019 seasons on Friday.

Already speculation is growing that the next round of rights could go for far beyond the £3bn Sky and BT paid between them to show matches last time. This round could hit £4bn, according to many analysts, and as much as £5bn, some are even saying.

The bids will be sealed in brown envelopes and the results are likely to be announced soon afterwards.

In the last Premier League auction, Sky bid £2.28bn over the three-year contract to show 116 matches a season and, having lost Champions League matches to BT, expect it to dig deeper in its pockets to do so once again.
