Ikea pledges to remove all single-use plastic from its product range and in-store restaurants by 2020
Swedish retailer also commits to achieving zero emissions on home deliveries by 2025
Ikea will remove all single-use plastic from its product range and restaurants by 2020 as part of its latest sustainability plan.
The Swedish furniture retailer pledged to design all of its products using “circular principles” with the aim of using only renewable and recycled materials.
Ikea is also committed to achieving zero emissions on its home deliveries by 2025 and said it would expand its offering of home solar equipment to 29 countries from five currently.
The company also said it would reduce the total climate footprint of its range by an average of 70 per cent per product.
More vegetarian options, including a vegan hot dog, will be available in Ikea stores in future, the retailer said.
The company has been working on innovations that will enable people to lessen their environmental impact including a tap nozzle that can save more than 90 per cent of water used and textiles that will help purify air.
Lena Pripp-Kovac, Ikea’s sustainability manager, said: “Becoming truly circular means meeting people’s changing lifestyles, prolonging the life of products and materials and using resources in a smarter way. To make this a reality, we will design all products from the very beginning to be repurposed, repaired, reused, resold and recycled.”
