Retailer Supergroup, the fashion brand favoured by celebrities including David Beckham and Pippa Middleton, has seen online overseas sales overtake UK web sales for the first time in its history.

Chief executive Julian Dunkerton called it a turning point for the company behind the Superdry label, with the gulf only expected to widen, as he revealed that sales soared 21.4 per cent to £192.1 million in the six months to the end of October.

However, pre-tax profits fell 28.8 per cent to £9.9 million as the company continues to spend heavily on expansion.

Online sales were up 18.7 per cent, with full-priced items increasing by 29.3 per cent, and Dunkerton said there were no plans to slow down store expansions.
