Tata Steel axes 110 jobs at Corby plant to cut costs

Tata Steel is laying off 110 staff at its Corby site in Northamptonshire, as part of a cost-cutting plan that will result in a total of 200 job losses across Europe.

The redundancies follow 1,200 layoffs at Tata's Scunthorpe, Redcar and Teeside plants last May, and are part of its ongoing drive to cut costs and improve efficiency as sluggish economies drag down demand for steel tubes.

Remco Blaauw, the managing director of Tata's European tube business, said: "The measures announced today are designed to bring these sites into a sustainable, financial position.

"Our goal is to minimise the impact on our employees and to assist affected colleagues through a difficult process," he added.

Michael Leahy, the general secretary of the Community union, said: "This is a massive blow for the workforce in Corby ... the impact on the local community and families will be particularly hard."
