Wetherspoon is taking on the likes of high-street coffee chains such as Starbucks and Costa by selling takeaway tea and coffees.

The pub chain has started offering “freshly ground and brewed” Rainforest-Alliance-certified Lavazza coffee for just 99p at its 950 branches.

This compares to £3 for a cappuccino in Starbucks or a £1.75 cup of tea at Costa or Caffè Nero.

“You can get coffee to take away in any of our pubs – why pay more on the high street,” the company posted in a tweet on its official page.

John Hutson, Wetherspoon chief executive said the company’s coffee is extremely popular with customers.

“We sell around a million cups a week in our pubs across the UK, and believe customers will welcome the opportunity to enjoy a takeaway cup too, at 99p,” Hutson said.

The decision is thought to be linked to a revamp the company is undergoing.

In February, Wetherspoons shocked customers after deciding to scrap roast dinners from its menu.

“There will be a lot of disappointed people and we apologise for that. But sometimes you have to make a commercial decision,” a spokesperson for the company said at the time. Instead, Wetherspoon added to its healthier fare with a vegan menu.

JD Wetherspoon like-for-like sales increased by 3.8 per cent in the 12 weeks leading up to April 24. The company expects to open 16 new pubs in the financial year.
