Almost 9,000 state school teachers took early retirement last year, official figures show.

In total, 8,880 state school teachers retired early in 2010-11 – the highest number for 13 years, according to Department for Education figures.

The National Union of Teachers suggested that "excessive workload, a restrictive curriculum" and worries over Ofsted inspections were to blame for the rise.
