Claire Beale's Best in Show: Coca-Cola (Weiden & Kennedy)
Students of advertising might be familiar with this week's Best in Show. It's been around, in the rest of the world and online, and on creative forums, for a while now. But UK consumers haven't been hit with it before. Now they will be.
It's a Coke ad, and it's made by Wieden & Kennedy in Portland, Oregon. And if you're a gamer, the ad will probably seem familiar. It's called Videogame, and it's a parody of the cultish Grand Theft Auto.
GTA is all about tough nuts on violent crime sprees. Not at all Coke. Coke is relentlessly about being nice. So, in the W&K ad, our thug takes a slug of Coca-Cola and his thirst for blood becomes a desire to spread happiness.
It's a lovely twist, brilliantly and authentically executed in epic proportions. Gamers and young people will love it. And the soundtrack seals the whole deal: it's the song "You Give a Little Love", from the film Bugsy Malone. This is what "I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing" looks like in 2008, and it's very cool.
