Concorde knowledge sees Calder to Mastermind win

The Independent's Senior Travel Editor Simon Calder won a charity edition of Celebrity Mastermind last night, seeing off challenges from The Observer food critic, Jay Rayner, the National Lottery presenter OJ Borj, and Anthony Costa from the boy band Blue.

Calder's specialist subject was the history of Concorde. He correctly named the first test pilot to fly the jet in 1969 (Brian Trubshaw), and the television presenter who claimed to be the airline's most regular passenger – Sir David Frost. But the maths graduate, who has worked for The Independent since 1994, had to pass on which famous trophy was brought back to Europe on Concorde in 1995 – golf's Ryder Cup.

He took part to raise money for the charity Farm Africa, which works with communities to stimulate development – with livestock deployed to boost local economies. Calder said his fee was "equivalent to 96 goats".

By the time of the broadcast the Indy man was en route to his latest assignment – in Tunisia.
