Revenue warns of phoney email scam

Taxpayers filling in self-assessment forms have been warned about fraud emails. H M Revenue and Customs say the emails urge recipients to click on a clone version of its official website and then to supply credit card and bank details. Some 200 such sites have been shut in three months.

Tsunami warning after ocean quake

A tsunami warning was issued last night after a powerful earthquake hit waters off western Indonesia. The US Geological Survey said the quake, 18 miles beneath the ocean floor, had a magnitude of 7.3. Arief Akhir, of Indonesia's geological agency, said a tsunami warning has been issued.

New boss offered a big bite of Apple

Tim Cook, the man who replaced the late Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple, has been promised a $376m (£242m) pay bonanza, in an attempt to tie him to the technology company for the next decade. MORE

Lord Justice Leveson suggested newspapers could be subject to a new system of press regulation on a day when the inquiry into media ethics heard testimony from leading Fleet Street editors. He warned of big changes, saying he couldn't "just tinker around the edges". MORE

More jobs on offer for 2012 graduates

The university "class of 2012" could fare better in the job market than last year's graduates as more than 1,000 extra jobs will be available for those who leave university this summer. The public sector will take an extra 500 graduates, while TeachFirst has upped its intake to 1,000.

Former Met officer arrested over bribes

A former Scotland Yard officer has been arrested over allegations of corrupt payments by journalists. The 52-year-old was apprehended at his Berkshire home by investigators from the Independent Police Complaints Commission who had been passed evidence by Operation Elveden, the investigation into illegal deals between police and the News of the World.

Merkel and IMF boss discuss Greek debt

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with the head of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde, with the talks dominated by Greece's debt woes. The discussions come as Athens rushes to avoid a disastrous default, with the country due to repay €14.4bn (£11.9bn) worth of bonds by mid-March. MORE

Iranian president flatters Nicaragua

The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Daniel Ortega his "brother president" as he arrived yesterday for the inauguration of the Central America leader's new term. In Managua after defending Iran's nuclear programme on a stop in Venezuela, Ahmadinejad drew parallels between the people of Iran and Nicaragua.

President destined to win re-election

The stars foretell a narrow re-election victory for Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou – but he'll only get by with a little help from his wife, according to well-known Taiwanese fortune teller, Chan Wei-chung. He said Ma will have the edge in the poll on 14 January.

Tourists trapped by record snowfall

The body charged with protecting US airports has defended its decision to confiscate an iced cupcake from a woman flying from Las Vegas. The Transportation Security Administration said Rebecca Hains was barred from carrying the cake as it was packed in a jar filled with icing, which is considered a gel, which is banned.

Roxy star Ferry, 66, weds 29-year-old

Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry has married for the second time in a "simple, private ceremony" in the Caribbean. The 66-year-old singer wed Amanda Sheppard, 29, on 4 January at the luxury beach resort of Amanyara on the Turks and Caicos Islands. Ferry divorced his first wife in 2003 after 21 years of marriage.
