The West Pier at Brighton, the only Grade I listed pier in the UK, is to be saved from the sea with the support of almost pounds 1m of National Lottery grants.
An initial grant of pounds 950,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund will fund emergency works to the pier, which was completed in 1866 but has been shut since 1975, before the autumn storms cause further damage.
A further grant of pounds 18,000 will contribute towards a development plan to ensure the pier's future, and more lottery money could be given to help complete the structure's completion.
