George Hedges, who died on 10 March aged 57, boasted an unusual combination of careers. As well as being a Hollywood lawyer, acting for celebrities such as Mel Gibson, he was also an archaeologist who distinguished himself for the part he played in the discovery of the lost city of Ubar on the Arabian peninsula, as well as the frankincense trade route in Yemen.
Though his legal activities in Hollywood gave him a high profile, he also did much pro bono work; he said he was most proud of overturning the death sentence of Adam Miranda, who had been wrongly convicted of murder.
