Because I Got High performer Afroman seemed less than calm in shocking video footage taken at his show in Biloxi, Mississippi, on Tuesday night.

The Grammy-nominated rapper, famed for the 2001 hit about loosing his life to cannabis abuse, appears to be seen punching a young female fan dancing behind him on stage to the floor.

He was later released on a $330 bail bond.

In a statement, his spokesperson said: "This was a completely involuntary reflex reaction to people infringing on his stage space.

"It was uncharacteristic behaviour that was initiated by outside uncontrolled forces."

Afroman released the EP One Hit Wonder in November.
