James O’Brien named a war veteran too modest to tell him he was accepting a medal for bravery later that same day one of the most “impressive” people he has ever spoken to.

The LBC presenter chatted with a 90-year-old caller named Mervyn, one of the last survivors of the Normandy Landings, on his radio show to mark Armistice Day.

After speaking to him about his experiences during war, O’Brien asked Mervyn about how he was planning to mark the day.

Mervyn replied that he had attended a march and would visit a rally to see if there was anyone there he knew - until his wife Betty picked up another phone in the house and said, on air, “What about the award?"

Realising Mervyn had been too modest to admit he was to receive the Legion D’Honneur, the highest decoration in France, at the French Embassy that afternoon, O’Brien told him: “You Sir, are possibly the most impressive person I've spoken to on this programme. Betty, you’ve got quite a man there.”
