A YouGov poll suggests one in four British people believe they know the names of the celebrity couple protected by a privacy injunction.

The Sun on Sunday wants to publish a story about a high-profile man's alleged “extra-marital” activities, but an order is currently in place in England and Wales preventing the tabloid from doing do. The ban also bars anyone from identifying the man and his spouse.

On Friday, the newspaper asked for the order to be overturned after the couple were named by publications in the US, Scotland and by a political blogger. On Monday, judges at the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Sun on Sunday and said the injunction should be lifted.

The man, named PJS in court documents, is hoping to launch a legal challenge against the decision.

Over 6,500 people in the YouGov poll were asked: “There has recently been a court injunction on a story about a celebrity couple and an extramarital threesome, preventing English media from naming the couple, known only as PJS and YMA.

“Do you know which celebrity couple the story concerns?”

Twenty-five per cent responded ‘yes’, 62 per cent said no and 13 per cent said they did not know enough about the story.

YouGov also found that in Scotland, 31 per cent believe they know the names of the two people involved.

Justices will analyse the man's case and decide whether to give him permission to launch a Supreme Court challenge. The injunction will stay in place until that decision is made on Thursday.

The couple was also named by an Australian website on Tuesday.
