The 91-year-old former President is said to be in a stable condition in hospital after a fall at his home in Maine

George Bush Snr has broken a bone in his neck after a fall at his home.

The 91-year-old former President is said to be in a stable condition at Maine Medical Center.

His spokesman, Jim McGrath, said on Twitter: "41 fell at home in Maine today and broke a bone in his neck. His condition is stable - he is fine - but he'll be in a neck brace."

President Bush Snr is the oldest living US president and served one term as the country’s 41st commander in chief between 1988 and 1992 after succeeding Ronald Reagan.

He was hospitalized in Houston for a week in December last year after experiencing breathing difficulties.

A hospital spokesman, Matt Paul, said President Bush was transported to hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

He said: “"He was brought here earlier today and diagnosed with a fracture in his neck. He is in stable condition and will be wearing a neck brace."

He added that it was “too early” to say when he would be released and would remain in hospital overnight.
