Jerry Seinfeld returns to stand-up comedy with a monthly New York residency

The 61-year-old said he had been inspired by the performances of Bill Joel at Madison Square Garden

Jerry Seinfeld just can’t get enough of making people laugh.

The 61-year-old New York-born comedian is set to begin a monthly gig at the city’s Beacon Theatre. His first show will be on January 7.

“My favorite theatre in New York to person in has always been The Beacon. Comedians live for certain houses that just feel ‘alive’ for some reason,” Seinfeld said.

“The Beacon is that place for me and I am so excited to it my new home.”

Seinfeld, probably best for for the eponymous NBC sitcom that he produced with with Larry David from 1989 to 1998.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the comedian said a career “comes out of the culture that you grew up in”.

“And I feel like New York and Long Island is what gave me the perspective to do what I do,” he said, according to the New York Times.

The theatre has announced that in addition to the January 7 performance, the one-man show, Jerry Seinfeld: The Homestand will take place on February 18, March 2, April 14, May 5 and June 8.

Seinfeld’s arrangement mirrors a similar one that the Madison Square Garden announced with Billy Joel at the end of 2013. That deal made the musician the venue’s first entertainment franchise - along with sports teams like the Knicks, Rangers and Liberty.

He cited Joel’s experience as an inspiration for seeking his own residency.

“When Billy Joel does ‘New York State of Mind’ at the Garden, it’s different,” Mr. Seinfeld said.

“It sounds different. It feels different than when he does it in Charlotte. So, I thought this is a really unique moment to see a guy who’d come from this area and built his career.”

He said that he owned a house that he had bought from Joel.

He added: “I thought, well, as long as I have his house, why don’t I steal his whole career?”
