The life of a movie star becomes increasingly unglamorous when you start looking more closely at what is required by each role.
Directors and actors want performances to be as authentic as possible which often means going to extreme measures: putting on weight to play a heavier person, method acting ala Sacha Baron Cohen that requires living in character for months - to the great umbrage of your long suffering spouse, or snorting powder to play a drug addict. Jonah Hill found himself in the latter category for The Wolf of Wall Street, a role that involved so much fake drug taking he says he was hospitalised with bronchitis.
“If you ingest that much matter into your lungs you’ll get very sick, and we were literally doing fake coke for, like, seven months, every day," he told his Any Given Wednesday host Bill Simmons.

Show all 7In this case, the fake substance was vitamin D powder, which Hill claims did have some beneficial effects.
