The TV presenter is experiencing problems putting on weight

Katie Piper is considering adopting a child who has suffered from burns because of the difficulty she could face trying to conceive as a result of her own injuries.

The model and TV presenter was left with severe burns after a jealous ex-boyfriend threw sulphuric acid over her face in 2008.

Piper recently gave birth to a daughter, Belle, but says she is now struggling with nutrition problems because of the long term damage to her oesophagus caused by the attack. The 31-year-old as undergone almost 200 pioneering operations, a number of which have targeted the damage caused to her throat when she inadvertently swallowed some of the acid.

She has experienced difficulty eating as a result and is unable to put on weight.

She told The Mirror: “If I eat anything it gets stuck and I choke, because when acid was thrown over me I swallowed some of it and it burned my throat.

“So I’ve been to the doctor and he has given me these vitamin shakes, which replace proper food. I take them every day.

“But there aren’t enough vitamins to help me make a baby. That is why I have become so skinny. I think adopting is the best option.”

Piper appeared in a documentary about the steps she took to rebuild her face and established the Katie Piper Foundation in 2009. The charity supports people who have burns and scars, and she says this line of work has made her aware of children who have suffered burns and are neglected by their parents.

“I’m really thinking about adopting a child from the charity," she said. "I would like to adopt, to give back a little.”
