Donald Trump’s opening monologue on Saturday Night Live has been interrupted by a guest star who called him a “racist”.

Comedian Larry David, SNL special guest and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm, shouted at the republican presidential contender: “You’re a racist! Trump’s a racist!”

He said he had heard he could get $5,000 (£3,322) if he shouted that during the show to which Mr Trump responded: “As a businessman, I can fully respect that.”

A campaign group, Deport Racism 2016, set up to fight racism against Hispanic people and the immigrant community in the run up to the presidential election, had previously offered the money to anyone who heckle Mr Trump during his guest appearance.

The group tweeted to say that Mr David will win the “bounty” anyway because “Joke or not, it was true”.

The Republican contender had appeared in a sketch with two cast members - Taran Killam and Darrell Hammond - who usually played him on the show.

He said: “They don’t have my talent, my money or especially my good looks, but you know what? They’re not bad, and we’re going to have a lot of fun tonight.”

Despite only being given 12 minutes of screen time - according to Variety - Mr Trump appeared on the show to “show [he] can take a joke”.

The reality TV star has attracted intense criticism since he entered the race for the presidency over his attitude towards the Latino community and immigration from central and south America.

He has made frequent derogatory comments; calling Mexican immigrants rapists and saying he wants to build a giant wall to keep illegal immigrants out.

The controversy has led to the loss of business contracts with US department store chain Macy’s and TV channels Univision, Televisa and NBC - which said it would no longer be airing the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants.
