Philip Seymour Hoffman’s autopsy results have been ruled inconclusive, a New York medical examiner has confirmed.
Further tests to determine the actor’s cause of death will be required, Julie Bolcer, a spokesperson for the examiner’s office, said.
However, she gave no details as to when the extended investigation would take place, or when the results would be released.
Police had been looking into the possibility that the actor died from a drug overdose, after he was discovered by a friend on the floor of his bathroom with a needle sticking out of his arm.
Law enforcement sources in New York have since confirmed the arrest of four people in connection with the 350 bags of heroin found at Hoffman’s Greenwich Village apartment .

The Oscar-winning actor was found dead on Sunday afternoon by his personal assistant and his friend, the playwright David Bar Katz.
Hoffman had been open about his past battles to overcome drug and alcohol dependency.
He checked himself into rehab early in 2013 following a relapse.
A private funeral is set to be held for the family and friends of the late Capote actor on Friday.
