Golfer Rory McIlroy and former tennis World Number One Caroline Wozniacki have announced their engagement.

The couple revealed their news over the social media website Twitter by posting a photo of Wozniacki’s enormous engagement ring.

The 24-year-old golfer from Northern Ireland and current world number six tweeted to his 1.8 million followers: “Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!”

23-year-old Danish tennis player Wozniacki posted a photo matching McIlroy’s to her followers, with a message reading: “Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!!!!”

The pair decided to get married while watching the New Year’s fireworks exploding over Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was included in the Twitter photo collage.

It was rumoured the sporting couple had broken up in late 2013, but appear to have put any alleged difficulties behind them.

Wozniacki is currently preparing for the Australian Open in the country.

Other high-profile golfers to get engaged recently include include Dustin Johnson to Paulina Gretzky, and Paula Creamer to Derek Heath.
