George Ives, soldier and farmer, died Vancouver 12 April, aged 111. Believed to be the last surviving soldier from the Boer war and the oldest man in Canada. Born in Brighton in 1881, he served with the Imperial Yeomanry (mounted infantry) in the Boer campaign. Emigrated to Canada in 1902, and set up a farm on the Saskatchewan-Alberta border. Returned to Britain 90 years later to lay a Remembrance Day wreath at the Cenotaph.
