STATE OFFICIALS in Florida are preparing to flood a wildlife reserve with more than 25,000 gallons of water in a last-ditch attempt to extinguish an underground peat fire that threatens to burn for months.
The fire at Rotenberger Wildlife Management Area, about 150 miles from Miami, started when a lightning strike ignited some grass. The burning peat has sent a huge cloud of putrid smoke over nearby communities.
