Di Maria strikes late as Argentina see off Switzerland

Argentina progressed to the quarter-finals after Angel di Maria’s goal three minutes from the end of extra time defeated a defiant Switzer- land 1-0.

For 117 minutes, Switzerland’s precise organisation was beyond Alejandro Sabella’s Argentina team. But then the winner arrived, as winger Di Maria was set up by man of the match Lionel Messi in the dying moments to score, as the South Americans avoided a penalty shoot-out.
