Chelsea earn revenge in nine-goal thriller

Chelsea gained a semblance of revenge for Sunday's league defeat against Manchester United, beating Sir Alex Ferguson's side 5-4 after extra time to reach the quarter-finals on another enthralling night of League Cup action.

Ryan Giggs stroked United in front after a mistake from Oriol Romeu before David Luiz – who scored an own goal in Sunday's 3-2 defeat – equalised from the penalty spot. Javier Hernandez, above, then continued his fine record against Chelsea to put the visitors 2-1 up at the break.

Gary Cahill headed Chelsea level on 52 minutes, before United went ahead for a third time through Portuguese winger Nani. With seconds remaining, Eden Hazard scored another penalty to make it 3-3 and take the tie into extra-time, and Daniel Sturridge and Ramires confirmed their side's place in the last eight. Giggs grabbed United's fourth goal , again from the penalty spot. MORE

Djokovic shocked as Murray coasts

World No 1 Novak Djokovic made a shock exit from the Paris Masters, going down 0-6, 7-6, 6-4 to American Sam Querrey. There was better news for Andy Murray, who eased into the third round with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Paul-Henri Mathieu. MORE

Paul Nicholls has announced the retirement of record-breaker Kauto Star. The chaser won two Cheltenham Gold Cups as well as five King George VI Chases. "The end of an era has arrived," Nicholls said. MORE

Cook on century duty in warm-up

Alastair Cook hit an unbeaten century to help England recover on the second day of the tour match against India A. Replying to the hosts' 369, England struggled to 133 for4 before Cook and Samit Patel staged a fightback to end on 286 for4. MORE

England lose Ashton for Fiji test

Chris Ashton will miss England's first autumn international against Fiji after being suspended for a week. The Saracens wing was handed the ban by the Rugby Football Union after a poor tackle on Northampton's Vasily Artemyev. MORE

Swans glide into the quarter-finals

Swansea won at Anfield for the first time in 48 years, beating holders Liverpool 3-1 to make the last eight for the first time. Chico Flores and Nathan Dyer put the visitors ahead before Luis Suárez halved the deficit. Jonathan De Guzmá* scored a late third for the Welsh side. MORE

Berg returns to take Rovers hotseat

Former Blackburn defender Henning Berg is returning to Ewood Park to take over as manager. The Norwegian, who succeeds Steve Kean, played 297 games for the club between 1993 and 2003 and helped the side win the Premier League title in the 1994/95 season. MORE

Norwich recover to make last eight

Two late goals gave Norwich a 2-1 win over Spurs and a place in the last eight. Gareth Bale put the visitors ahead before a Jan Vertonghen own goal and Simeon Jackson strike put Norwich in front. Clint Dempsey then missed a penalty for Spurs. MORE

Wenger: Walcott ready to go on strike

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger believes Theo Walcott's hat-trick against Reading showed his readiness for a central striking role. "He is a good finisher," Wenger said. "He knows where to be for the rebounds. That is a quality you cannot give to anybody." MORE
