Birmingham neurosurgeon Nafees Hamid charged with 10 further sex offences

A neurosurgeon in Birmingham has been charged with a further 10 sex offences, as he prepares to appear in court over an earlier charge of sexual assault.

Nafees Hamid, from Moseley in the city's south, is accused of assaulting women at the Priory Hospital, Edgbaston, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham across two years up to February 2013.

The 50-year-old was previously charged with sexually assaulting a female patient at the Priory Hospital in June this year. He will appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on 3 December over that charge.

He is employed by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which has launched an internal investigation.

Detective Inspector Ian Ingram, from the West Midlands Police Public Protection Unit, said: "We are working closely with the Trust as part of our ongoing investigation."

A spokeswoman for the Trust said: "Mr Hamid has been excluded from practising at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham until the criminal investigation is complete because of the seriousness of the allegation.

"The Trust has written to patients treated in the Neurosurgical Department informing them of the internal investigation."

A spokesman for BMI Healthcare declined to comment because the case was active, but said the company will cooperate fully with the police.
