Driver held after collision with cyclist

A motorist has been arrested after a cyclist claimed he was knocked off his bicycle deliberately, leaving him with a broken collarbone.

Stephen Roberts said he was rammed off the road while pedalling at 30mph on his trial bike in Brockenhurst, Hampshire, on 11 September.

Mr Roberts, currently joint champion of the New Forest Cycling Club, said on the club's website that the car drew up alongside him and sounded its horn before forcing him off the road and leaving him lying on the verge. This was shortly after he made a gesture at the driver, having been forced to break suddenly at a pinch point on the road.

The 44-year-old suspect, who was arrested after voluntarily attending Lyndhurst Police Station, has since been released on bail and will be questioned tomorrow.

Meanwhile South Yorkshire Police have arrested a driver involved in an alleged hit-and-run accident in Sheffield that left another cyclist with life-threatening injuries. The 48-year-old victim, who remains in a serious condition in hospital with a head injury and a broken hip, was hit by an Audi A3 on Friday when the car apparently went on to the wrong side of the road while attempting to overtake him.

A 42-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop to report an accident.
