Police have arrested a 37-year-old journalist as part of the ongoing investigation into phone hacking.

The man was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods after attending an east London police station by appointment at 11am.

The arrest, by officers from Operation Tuleta, which is focused on breaches of privacy alongside the phone-hacking inquiry, relates to a suspected conspiracy involving the gathering of data from stolen mobile phones, the Metropolitan Police said.

A spokesman added: "The arrest is not about seeking journalists to reveal confidential sources in relation to information that has been obtained legitimately."

He is the ninth person arrested under Operation Tuleta.
