Detectives interview suspect after 21-year-old’s body is found in Humber estuary

Man arrested in Libby Squire murder probe

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering Libby Squire, whose body was found in the Humber estuary in March.

Humberside Police said detectives were questioning a 25-year-old man over the death of the student.

The 21-year-old was reported missing in the early hours of 1 February after a night out with friends in Hull. Her body was recovered just over six weeks later.

Police said in a statement on Wednesday evening: “Libby’s family continue to receive support from specially trained officers and have been updated on the investigation.”

Squire, who was studying philosophy at Hull University, went missing after getting a taxi home following a night out in the city. She was last seen on a bench near her house about half an hour after being dropped off.

Hundreds of police officers, as well as dog handlers, underwater search teams, and members of the public, were involved in a search for the missing student.

Her remains were identified by her fingerprints after being found near Spurn Head, at the mouth of the River Humber, on 20 March.

Police did not release the conclusions of a postmortem investigation into her death, citing “operational reasons”.
