Police are investigating the death of a 10-month-old baby girl who died after being admitted to hospital on Boxing Day.

Devon and Cornwall Police said today they had arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of GBH in connection with the "unexplained" death of the infant in Ottery St Mary, east Devon.

A spokesman said she was admitted unconscious to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital during the evening of December 26 and later transferred to the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, where she died yesterday.

"The girl has not been formally identified but her next of kin were with her at the time of her death, she said.

"The Force's public protection unit has begun an investigation and a 28-year-old man from Ottery St Mary has been arrested on suspicion of GBH."

The man was bailed until February 13, 2012.
