A man is believed to have murdered his elderly mother before hanging himself in the attic.

Neighbours discovered the bodies of Stephen Dohoney, 55, and his mother, Ethel, 86, at their home in Woodhouse Park, Wythenshawe, south Manchester, shortly before 12.30pm yesterday.

Mrs Dohoney was found dead along with Mr Dohoney who was found hanged in the attic.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said post-mortem results are expected later today.

Mrs Dohoney had reportedly been suffering from a number of ailments in recent years and her son was her carer.

Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths, it is understood.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Larkin from GMP said: "At this time we are making initial inquiries into the death of this man and woman and a post-mortem is yet to take place."

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 9283 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
