Streatham stabbing: Mother pushing her child in buggy attacked by ‘silent’ assailant in London

A woman has been stabbed in front of her young child in a silent and “unprovoked” attack in London.

The 36-year-old victim was walking with a pushchair in Streatham Hill when she was attacked on Monday.

“She was attacked from behind by a lone suspect, described as a black man, around 6ft tall and wearing dark clothing,” a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said.

“The man did not speak as he stabbed the victim three times before running off down Downton Avenue away from the High Road.”

Police were called at 5.25pm and found the woman with stab injuries. She was taken to hospital but her wounds were not found to be life-threatening or life threatening.

“The stabbing occurred as the victim was pushing her child in a pushchair,” a statement added. “The child was not injured.”

Investigators said they “retain an open mind as to any motive” as the hunt for the suspect continues.

Officers are carrying out forensic work at the scene and analysis of CCTV in the area.

The stabbing came after knife crime rose to a new record of 44,000 offences in a year in England and Wales.

At least 149 homicide investigations have been launched by the Metropolitan Police in 2019, making the year London’s bloodiest since 2008.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
