A teenage girl has died and two young men are seriously injured after a car crash in Cumbria on Christmas Eve.

The unnamed 17-year-old girl was in the passenger seat of a blue fiat Punto when the vehicle collided with a white mini Cooper between Tallentire and Gilcrux, near Cockermouth, at around 5.15pm last night.

She was taken to Cumberland Infirmary with critical injuries but later died in hospital. Her family have been informed.

The driver of the blue Punto, a local 18-year-old man, was also taken to the nearby hospital but was later transferred to the Royal Victory Infirmary, Newcastle, with serious injuries.

The 23-year-old male driver of the white mini was also taken to Cumberland Infirmary and is in a serious condition, according to a Cumbria police statement.
