A teenager has been jailed for five years after admitting stabbing his stepfather to death in a row over a television.

Moynul Haque, 18, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mohammed Zillur-Rahman, 43, an imam at Chadwell Heath mosque, east London, at the Old Bailey in February.

He was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court in north London to five years less the 182 days he has already spent on remand, a court official said.

Haque was 17 when the dispute broke out at the family home in Melford Avenue, Barking, in October last year.

An argument over Haque moving a television into his bedroom led to him picking up a knife from the kitchen and stabbing Mr Zillur-Rahman after a struggle.

Mr Zillur-Rahman died after being stabbed through the heart.

Haque was said to be shocked and crying and asked "What did I do?", the court previously heard.

Relations between the pair had been strained in the previous year and Haque appeared to have been asked to leave in the summer.

In a statement to police, Haque said his stepfather had tried to hit him with a curtain pole.

Haque said: "He was so angry. I ran into the kitchen and picked up a knife to prevent my father assaulting me. He came after me and I saw him collapse. I was acting in self-defence."
