A police chase ended with two men dead in north London this morning.

One of the cars - an Audi - crashed into a bridge on Seven Sisters Road in Haringey after running a red light and clipping a white van.

The driver tried to flee, but he was caught and arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while disqualified, Scotland Yard said.

He was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be serious. The driver of the white van was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The two dead men have not been identified.

Officers on routine patrol became suspicious of the Audi just before 2am, after it appeared to make off at speed when the driver saw them.

After several minutes searching for the car they spotted it and tried to catch up, Scotland Yard said.

The Audi was driven through a red light before it hit the van and then crashed into the bridge.

A police spokesman said: “Two male passengers in the Audi, both believed to be aged in their late twenties or early thirties, were seriously injured.

“Officers gave CPR prior to the arrival of ambulances, but both were pronounced dead at the scene. Inquiries continue to establish the identity of the two men.”

Traffic officers are investigating the collision and roads surrounding the scene were closed this morning.
